She argued that “a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction”. Since then, the concept of “A Room of One’s Own” has become a sort of shorthand to describe the need that artists of all persuasions share; the need to create an oasis, a sacred and inspiring space where they can work away from the disturbances and interruptions of daily life.

As professional artists, most of us at Spectrum Art and Jewelry have our own rooms or studios (I’m one of the rare exceptions—these days the gallery doubles as my studio). But how do you create the feeling of a room of one’s own, if you don’t actually have a room? How about with a few objects of your own?

Naturally, inside any art studio you will find the tools and materials that artist needs to create: paints, brushes, glass, tools, buttons, canvases, metals, and stones. But what else will you find? Objects. Those special iconic pieces that transport us, encourage us, and serve as muses that connect us to our source of creativity.

Seashells are a great object to inspire creativity. Simply holding them or looking at them can take you back to the ocean and that feeling of connection to Nature and Spirit. Rocks and beach glass fragments are also wonderful natural objects to keep close by. Conni Mainne keeps her pulse on nature by working in a room with a great view of the Pacific Ocean, while Ann Hair’s favorite nature-inspired object is a cobalt blue vase filled with sunflowers.

Travel photos, family photos and postcards are another great way to inspire your creativity. Family heirlooms that evoke special memories can also get the creative juices flowing: Kristen Gibson keeps her grandmother’s teapots, her first pair of glasses, and vintage linens nearby while she paints.

Looking at books, magazines, and other people’s artwork can also spark great, new ideas. And many of our artists listen to music while they create.

You don’t have to wait for a room of your own, to unleash your creativity—surround yourself with inspiring objects and let your imagination soar!

Art Star of the Week: Eric McRay

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 130px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ept2PezP_sI/So7Qv68VbTI/AAAAAAAAAq4/hAtfU8fXjTI/s400/McRay,+Southern+Comfort,+AC,20x60,1800+web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5372460927194328370" />
Star here: I first met Eric McRay at an Open Studio Event in Raleigh many years ago. As I recall, he was speaking on the phone as I admired his work. I was about to slip out of the studio, when he finished his call, looked up with a smile, and asked me: “So, what’s your favorite?” To paraphrase that line from Jerry Maguire: He had me at ‘So…’
A wonderful professional working relationship was born from that first conversation. As to choosing a favorite, that’s a tough thing to do. I admire Eric’s use of pure color and his splashy, playful style. Here’s a little more insight into the expressive Eric McRay:

Star: Describe yourself in three words.
Eric McRay: Ambitious, Passionate, and Independent

Star: What other jobs have you held besides artist?
Eric McRay: Personal Financial Analyst, Computer Salesman, and Housekeeping Supervisor.

Star: Who are your major influences?
Eric McRay: Picasso, Andy Warhol, Matisse, Romare Bearden, Robert Motherwell, and Peter Max.

Star: In what other areas of your life do you let your artistry shine?
Eric McRay: Gardening.

Star: What’s your guilty pleasure?
Eric McRay: Reading comic books.

Star: If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
Eric McRay: A robot body so I would never have to sleep or eat. I could perpetually make art.

Star: What’s your personal motto?
Eric McRay: “A man’s reach should exceed his grasp”.

Star: Complete this sentence: My life is…
Eric McRay:…a dream come true.

Star: How about this one? Art is…
Eric McRay:… my life.

Star: What’s the best advice you could give to a new artist?
Eric McRay: Develop a thick skin, be disciplined, and never give up.

Causeway Cacciatore

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ept2PezP_sI/So7CWLP1QLI/AAAAAAAAAqw/4BnBUQ8Vmvw/s400/Chicken+Cacciatore+(Hunter+Style+Chicken)+500.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5372445091731685554" />
By Nicole Wilkinson

Putting a coastal spin on an old recipe, I have changed some ingredients and added others. Read how we helped one of our customers, Debbie Shegog, create a new piece that reflected her modern style while still honoring the past:

I majored in Art Education at East Carolina University, and jewelry-making was my preferred medium. Consequently, I have a strong appreciation for quality design, and I recognize a good jewelry artist when I see one. Star’s gallery, Spectrum Art and Jewelry, is one of the best I have ever encountered. Star is not only a talented jewelry designer, but also a wonderful business woman. Her staff members (all artists themselves) are knowledgeable, responsive, and professional, making each visit to the gallery a delight.

My primary residence is a farmhouse about two-and-a-half hours away, but my family also has a home at the beach. Whenever we’re staying at the beach house, I make it a point to visit Spectrum Art and Jewelry at least once a week. Between the ever-changing collections, the special events the gallery hosts, and unique programs like the Jewelry Box Review (which I’m dying to do!), there are plenty of reasons to drop in.

Over the years, I have purchased gifts, jewelry, and artwork for our homes, but I consider my collaboration with Star on a custom-designed ring as my favorite:

My great Aunt on my father’s side was a very interesting woman. Born at the turn of the century, she worked as a journalist, living first in Virginia and later in Kingsport, Tennessee. She married, but never had children. My aunt did, however, take a shine to me and my younger sister. In later years,=20 after losing her husband, my aunt became reclusive and increasingly eccentric. As a result, we lost touch. But when she passed away, she remembered us, leaving beautiful rings to both me and my sister.

My ring was a large, clear diamond set in a very traditional platinum setting. Although I recognized the quality of the diamond, the setting did not reflect my personal style and more modern sensibilities. I took the ring to Star and we collaborated together on creating a new design to showcase the diamond.

Star had great ideas; she suggested keeping one side of the ring in the traditional platinum style and melding it with a modern yellow gold look on the other side. The ring is now a fusion between the past and the present, representing my family history but also reflecting the modern life I’ve created for my own family. I wear the ring all of the time, and get many compliments from people who admire its unique custom design. I love that my ring tells the story of my great Aunt who led an untraditional life for a woman 20 in her day. It also tells my story of a woman who loves art and jewelry design, but who loves family even more. I hope this special ring will be a family heirloom for generations of women to come. —Debbie Sheegog

Art Star of the Week: Anne Boysen

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ept2PezP_sI/SosaVZkFqWI/AAAAAAAAAqo/xjkHWqg4TYw/s400/Anne+in+Studio+2005.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371415935511275874" />
Star here: I first met artist Anne Boysen at an art show in Philadelphia. Here’s more about the vivacious Anne Boysen:

Star: Describe yourself in three words.
Anne Boysen: Spontaneous, resilient, energetic.

Star: What was your childhood ambition?
Anne Boysen: To be a ballet dancer.

Star: What other jobs have you held besides artist?
Anne Boysen: Handywoman, Sales, Toy Demonstrator, Psychologist, and Banker.

Star: In what other areas of your life do you let your artistry shine?
Anne Boysen: Cooking, decorating ideas, gardening, and my wardrobe.

Star: How would you describe your fashion style?
Anne Boysen: Early thrift store with Spectrum jewelry.

Star: What’s your guilty pleasure?
Anne Boysen: Breakfast at MacDonald’s.

Star: So far, what’s been your proudest moment?
Anne Boysen: A book, Art of Exuberance, published about my artwork.

Star: What’s your personal motto?
Anne Boysen: Keep on truckin'.

Star: Complete this sentence: My life is…
Anne Boysen:…great, I'm lucky to be an artist doing what I want to do.

Art Star of the Week: Rollin Karg

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 271px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ept2PezP_sI/SosXDgyeJZI/AAAAAAAAAqg/B103KVN0hVs/s400/Carnival+Orb+Bowl.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371412329678120338" />
Star here: Studio glass artists are like the rock stars of the art world. Assembling a big, heavy glass art creation requires an entire band of players working in concert. It’s an edgy, dangerous, and sweaty undertaking, which makes it all the more hip and glamorous to fans of the craft. I’ve carried Rollin Karg’s glass artwork in our store for almost ten years. He’s shared a number of video productions with us to demonstrate just how involved each project is. His art glass has become a perennial favorite with our customers. I wasn’t at all surprised to learn that there’s a little bit of rock and roll in Rollin’s soul (and his wardrobe). Here’s what I uncovered in my recent “Art Star” interview with the impressive Rollin Karg:

Star: Give us a few words that describe you.
Rollin Karg: Old, talented, alive, fisherman.

Star: What was your childhood ambition?
Rollin Karg: To be a forest ranger.

Star: When the well runs dry, how do you recharge your creativity?
Rollin Karg: I go fishing.

Star: What’s the best advice you could give to a new artist?
Rollin Karg: Become an accountant. (joking)

Star: Which artists do you most admire?
Rollin Karg: Paley, Van Gogh, and Gaugin.

Star: In what other areas of your life, do you let your artistry shine?
Rollin Karg: When I’m fishing.

Star: Is that when your best ideas come to you?
Rollin Karg: Yes, but also when I’m flying, driving or listening to music.

Star: Where’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever been?
Rollin Karg: The Everglades.

Star: What’s your most cherished item in your wardrobe?
Rollin Karg: A Rolling Stones hat.

Star: Do you listen to music when you create?
Rollin Karg: Yes; Rock ‘n roll, R&B, and Classical

Star: What’s your personal motto?
Rollin Karg: Go for it!

Don’t Read My Lips; Read My Jewelry!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 105px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ept2PezP_sI/SsJdnvOwrTI/AAAAAAAAAso/LAx0f6s3sAo/s320/Albright+and+brooches.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5386971041563192626" />
Most often we think of jewelry as beautiful decoration or adornment, but jewelry also has the power to communicate important messages. Recently, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright has brought this idea to the spotlight with her book Read My Pins: Stories from a Diplomat’s Jewel Box , which has been published in conjunction with the Museum of Arts and Design’s first major exhibition of jewelry from Ms. Albright’s personal collection.

In 1997, Albright was named the first female secretary of state and became, at that time, the highest ranking woman in the history of the U.S. government. While serving under President Bill Clinton, first as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, and then as secretary of state, Albright became known for wearing brooches that purposefully conveyed her views about the situation at hand.

It all started when Albright criticized Saddam Hussein. Hussein’s poet in residence responded by calling her "an unparalleled serpent." Shortly thereafter, while preparing to meet with Iraqi officials, Albright decided to make a diplomatic statement by wearing a snake pin she happened to have in her jewelry box.

From that day forward, pins became part of Albright's diplomatic communication. She used them to convey all kinds of messages. Lauren Collins, journalist for The New Yorker who profiled Albright’s new book writes, “A stalled negotiation might have elicited from her jewelry box a tortoise in lapis lazuli; a friendly summit, the dandelion with a moonstone for its puff; a contentious encounter, a turquoise wasp or a copper-pincered crab.” Visit TheNewYorker.com to see a slideshow of some of Albright’s pins: Ms. Albright says: "Before long, and without intending it, I found that jewelry had become part of my personal diplomatic arsenal. Former president George H. W. Bush had been known for saying 'Read my lips.' I began urging colleagues and reporters to 'Read my pins.'"

The Huffington Post reports that: “The nation's 64th secretary of state became so famous for her pin diplomacy that when she wore a necklace to a nonpolitical event where she was the featured speaker, the organizer insisted the secretary go out and buy a brooch before taking the podium. Albright, now a professor at Georgetown University, is said to have complied.”

Not surprisingly, Albright’s pin collection is both international and democratic, including not just designer creations, but also family heirlooms and dime-store costume jewelry.

Do you have a piece of jewelry that you wear in certain situations, or that you feel says something about you? Please share your story with us here in the comments. We look forward to “reading” your pins and rings and necklaces too.

Nicole's New Recipe

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ept2PezP_sI/SosUBhHt4II/AAAAAAAAAqY/R16uizvNlXg/s400/rolls.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371408996872609922" />
Many of you may not know, but I have a healthy eating blog where you can find low fat, vegetarian recipes! With a long knife, cut it vertically into slices 1/8-1/4 inch thick. The first and last slices will have too much skin for easy rolling; discard them or save them for stew. Choose your best 8 slices and gently rub both sides with salt. Place them in a colander in the sink and allow them to drip for 30 mins. This tenderizes the eggplant and removes its bitterness.

While the eggplant sits, prepare the tomato sauce. Saute the garlic in olive oil over medium heat until lightly browned, about 2-3 mins. Add the tomatoes, red pepper, salt and black pepper. Lower heat and simmer 15 mins, breaking tomatoes apart with the back of your spoon. Stir in basil and simmer over very low heat while you prepare the rest of the ingredients.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and return to your eggplant slices. Rinse them under the faucet and pat them dry. Brush both sides with olive oil and place on the baking sheet. Roast for 20 mins, until the thinner parts of the slices are golden brown.

While the eggplant roasts, prepare the white bean puree. Put all of the ingredients in a food processor and puree until uniform and smooth. When the roasted eggplant slices are cool enough to handle, assemble the rolls. Thinly spread about 1 tablespoon of white bean puree on the eggplant slice then lay the 3-4 zucchini matchsticks across one end. Beginning at that end, roll up the eggplant slice and place it in the baking dish, seam side down. When all of the rolls are in place, spoon the tomato sauce over them and top with bread crumbs. Bake for 25-30 mins , until the breadcrumbs are golden. Serves 4.

Santa Fe Sojourn

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ept2PezP_sI/Sq_o_cl1qUI/AAAAAAAAAsA/sKvm4r1-ogQ/s320/Santa+Fe+Trip+2009+007.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381776256435333442" />

Star here: I lived in Santa Fe for close to ten years before relocating Wilmington, NC. I loved everything about Santa Fe: the wide open spaces, the dramatic vistas, the unique sculptural architecture, and the rich culture and history. Living there is truly a singular experience as it attracts very interesting and creative people.

The landscape is open and unfettered by many fences and roads. I used to ride cross- country with my horse from the barn; I could ride for hours with fifty-to-one-hundred-mile views most of the trip.

It had been almost a decade since my last visit, but this year I was fortunate return to Santa Fe on two occasions. The first time was over the Easter holiday with my boyfriend, Robert. We enjoyed a quick weekend of visiting friends and hiking in the mountains. That just whetted my appetite for more of New Mexico. I hadn’t realized just how much I missed the Southwest.

So I scheduled a week to return with Nancy Noel May and Debby Brandt in the early fall with a plan to focus on visiting and meeting artists, collecting art references for paintings and jewelry designs, visiting galleries, shopping, and of course, enjoying fabulous restaurants.

I had a blast designing a trip that would introduce my friends to Santa Fe and expose them to the true flavor of Northern New Mexico. Nancy kept a travel journal of the trip and here are some excerpts:

Friday, August 28, 2009

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ept2PezP_sI/Sq_ptAQdjuI/AAAAAAAAAsI/9qC6AgjglQw/s320/Santa+Fe+Trip+2009+001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381777039103463138" />

First Impressions
This place is beautiful! Star rode us through the historic plaza area and then we stopped at a grocery for a few provisions. We are staying in a delightful guest apartment attached to the home of Michael Sugarman and Christie Frantz who are jewelers we represent at Spectrum. There are gorgeous views from every window and we are located just minutes from the Plaza. (See their house in the photo above)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ept2PezP_sI/Sq_qDRX1iII/AAAAAAAAAsQ/dsbK-Bnp5IM/s320/Santa+Fe+Trip+2009+008.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381777421654919298" />
This photo is from Canyon Road. I loved the blue shutters and colorful flower pots. I've created a painting from this image which is currently in the gallery.

After getting settled and enjoying a glass of wine and conversation with Michael and Christie, we headed out to Canyon Road, famous for it’s dozens of fine art galleries, to do a little window shopping and take photos. On impulse we stopped at El Farol, Santa Fe's Oldest Restaurant & Cantina, a Spanish tapas restaurant and bar for drinks and dinner. Turned out to be their weekly Blues Jam so we had entertainment as well!

About the Shopping:
We enjoyed perusing the offerings of the many Native American vendors set up under the portal of the Palace of the Governor’s. They had jewelry, pottery, wood carvings, sand paintings and much more. It was fascinating to speak with them and learn more about each person’s craft. Debby and I always pick up a Christmas ornament wherever our travels take us and we both selected ones in hand tooled copper.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ept2PezP_sI/Sq_qmNuHNaI/AAAAAAAAAsY/UztOOVt1Wpw/s320/Santa+Fe+Trip+2009+012.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381778021970032034" />

Michael referred us to a great consignment shop on Guadalupe Street called "Double Take". It is a huge, but well organized place with boots, clothes, jewelry and more. I was hunting for cool cowboy boots and found many options, but most were out of my price range. Star lucked out and found a great leather jacket for only $40.

Of course there are hundreds of gorgeous and interesting shops near the Santa Fe Plaza. It’s overwhelming just how much outstanding jewelry, clothing, collectibles, artifacts and art exists in such a small area. Star took us to many of her favorite places and also to visit her many old friends in the area. Debby and I both purchased gold charms at Fairchild’s to add to our travel bracelets.

The Food:
We also enjoyed a great lunch of Northern New Mexican specialties at Tia Sophia's. Don't pass up the sopapillas (lightly fried dough: you split it open and pour in some honey, then you sprinkle it cinnamon—delicious!). Also, remember that everything comes with either red or green chili in New Mexico. Typically the green is hottest, but you need to ask first. We enjoyed “Christmas” style which is a little of both (red & green).

The Coyote Cantina is a wonderful rooftop cafe/bar. It’s a very lively spot with great food and margaritas. It is a part of the famous Coyote Café which is located next door.

More adventures await, tune in for the next installment. Nancy

Art Star of the Week: Kristin Gibson

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ept2PezP_sI/SosPCcpHULI/AAAAAAAAAqQ/eGn23Hiy4aY/s400/kristin.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371403515292242098" />
Star here: I pursued Kristin Gibson for quite some time, eager to bring her prolific talents to Spectrum Art and Jewelry. Kristin is the mother of active school-age children, yet she still manages to produce an incredible body of work. She gets her children off to school each morning and sets up wonderful still life displays in her home so she can paint until they come home. She finds the most gorgeous flowers and vegetables you’ve ever seen! We carry both her paintings and her gorgeous hand-painted scarves (infused with Carolina Beach sunshine). Here’s more insight into the effervescent & energetic Kristin Gibson:

Star: When the well runs dry, how do you recharge your creativity?
Kristin Gibson: Take a bike ride or swim in the ocean.

Star: Who or what are your major influences?
Kristin Gibson: I am definitely influenced by a lifetime by the sea and by the small pleasures of daily life.

Star: Are there any special objects that you keep in your studio for inspiration?
Kristin Gibson: My grandmother's teapots, my first pair of glasses, vintage linens, shells, postcards.

Star: Which artists do you most admire?
Kristin Gibson: Matisse, Georgia O'Keefe, Cézanne, Cynthia Packard.

Star: In what other areas of your life do you let your artistry shine?
Kristin Gibson: I do like to cook all the foods I paint. And similar to the way I paint, I'm not afraid to mix a little bit of this with a little bit of that, and use every pot in the kitchen. I also like to plant flowers and give kids the opportunity to get messy with art.

Star: When do your best ideas come to you?
Kristin Gibson: When I’m food shopping!

Star: So far, what’s been your proudest moment?
Kristin Gibson: Being a mom.

Star: Would you ever do a reality show?
Kristin Gibson: No way, my life already feels enough like a reality show!

Star: What’s your motto?
Kristin Gibson: Look on the bright side.

Star: What’s the best advice you could give to a new artist?
Kristin Gibson: Paint and paint some more, steadfast everyday. Market yourself just as much.

Art Star of the Week; Jane Faudree

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 236px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ept2PezP_sI/SosLqwYNwkI/AAAAAAAAAqA/ShVzDxblTxM/s400/me3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371399809738326594" />
Star here: I found artist Jane Faudree in a most unusual way; I went on a date with her ex-husband! One date was all he & I needed to see that we weren’t suited, but lucky for me, Jane and I got a great relationship out of that adventure!

Not only is Jane one of our gallery artists, she became a part of the Spectrum Art and Jewelry team. Her extensive art training brings a unique perspective to the gallery. Jane has never met a stranger; in fact, we joke that she appears to be related to everyone in Southeastern North Carolina! We can’t tell you how many times customers discover, after chatting with Jane, that they are in fact distant cousins! Here’s more on the outgoing and loving Jane Faudree.

Star: What was your childhood ambition?
Jane Faudree: To sing.

Star: What is your fondest memory?
Jane Faudree: Always going to Aunt Helen’s on Sunday afternoon to be with the family.

Star: What other jobs have you held besides artist?
Jane Faudree: Oral Surgeon’s Assistant, Art Gallery Manager, Small Business Owner, Kindergarten Music Teacher.

Star: When the well runs dry, how do you recharge your creativity?
Jane Faudree: With music and vino.

Star: Who were your major influences?
Jane Faudree: The French and American Impressionists as well as my father’s love for the arts.

Star: In what other areas of your life do you let your artistry shine?
Jane Faudree: I have always sung, in groups, choirs and solo. I like to decorate my house and landscape my yard. I recently created a unique way to bathe my cat by lowering her into a warm bathtub in her carrier (otherwise, she needs to be tranquilized).

Star: Where’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever been?
Jane Faudree: Venice.

Star: How would you describe your art studio in five words or less?
Jane Faudree: Running over with projects.

Star: Complete this sentence: Art is…
Jane Faudree:…as necessary to life as food and drink.

Spectrum Art House Films

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ept2PezP_sI/SosKi05TOKI/AAAAAAAAAp4/6qqBje0rdQg/s400/FilmReel.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371398574000257186" />
According to Wikipedia, an art film (also called “art cinema”, “art movie”" or “art house film”) is typically a serious, noncommercial, independently made film or a foreign language film made by a major company. It may thus be aimed at a niche audience, rather than a mass audience, or the use of subtitles in foreign language films may limit audience appeal.
Here at Spectrum Art & Jewelry, we believe that art and films should don’t have to have limited appeal. Art is for everyone; and so are the movies. Here’s a short list of favorite popular films you’ll find in the houses of some of our best-selling painters, jewelers, sculptors, and mixed media artists:
A Star is Born
Dirty Dancing
Gone with the Wind
Gran Torino
Mamma Mia
Once Upon a Time in the West
Planet of the Apes
Shawshank Redemption
The Last of the Mohicans
The Wizard of Oz
What Dreams May Come
White Christmas

Art Star of the Week: Conni Mainne

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 216px; height: 317px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ept2PezP_sI/SosHzCarzNI/AAAAAAAAApo/WNdZO01LfII/s400/Mainne+-+Grey+Prl+%26+Grn+Tourm+Earrings.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371395553972964562" />

Star here: I’ve known about Conni Mainne for at least twenty years, but we just started working together three years ago. Conni overheard me speaking with another vendor at a trade show and she joined the conversation. Next thing you know, I was admiring her lusciously feminine jewelry designs while we negotiated terms for representation.

Conni’s 18k gold jewelry and graceful botanical motifs are a perfect fit for our gallery and have proven to be extremely popular with our customers. As for me, I’m thrilled that we were finally able to strike up a friendship after orbiting each other’s worlds for so many years. I can’t wait to try her famous cheesecake; if it’s half as good as her jewelry design, I know I’ll be in heaven. Here’s a little more insight into the engaging Conni Mainne:

Star: When the well runs dry, how do you recharge your creativity?
Conni Mainne: I dance. It used to be rock ‘n roll dancing, then samba, and now it’s rumba or salsa.

Star: Are there any special objects that you keep in your studio for inspiration?
Conni Mainne: Windows—I have a fabulous view of the Pacific Ocean through the trees. I can’t create without a view.

Star: Where’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever been?
Conni Mainne: On the hillside in Sounion, Greece.

Star: What is your fondest memory?
Conni Mainne: A fabulous party that came about on the spur of the moment when I lived in a very small village on the northern California coast called Marshall. Population 50--says so right on the green road sign. The fishermen had come in with their gill nets full of rock crabs (called stone crabs in Florida) that can’t be sold here. So we got a bunch of friends together and feasted. It was an enchanted evening.

Star: In what other areas of your life, do you let your artistry shine?
Conni Mainne: I’ve made my small home very cozy and inviting. Guests are always saying how comfortable they feel, and it’s my MOST favorite compliment. I also love cooking, and I take great pleasure in offering something new to friends.

Star: What’s your specialty?
Conni Mainne: Hands down: my cheesecake. My guilty pleasure is rich, fattening food. The whole range. Oh dear

Star: What is your personal motto?
Conni Mainne: A Rumi poem: “Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I’ll meet you there. When the soul lays down in that grass, the world is too full to talk about. Ideas, language, even the phrase ‘each other’ doesn’t make any sense.”

Star: Describe your studio in five words or less.
Conni Mainne: Small, tidy, and surprisingly complete!

Star: What’s the best advice you could give to a new artist?
Conni Mainne: Make your art something you do every single day, in some form. This keeps the taps flowing and increases your skills and confidence.

The Art of Cooking

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 282px; height: 324px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ept2PezP_sI/SosFlNlCMhI/AAAAAAAAApQ/M4M8-HbQGds/s400/julia-child.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371393117427741202" />
The recent film Julie and Julia based on the book, Mastering the Art of French Cooking has lots of people talking about cooking. At the age of 30-year-old Julie Powell is living in a rundown apartment outside of Manhattan and working at a soul-sucking secretarial job that's going nowhere.

She needs something to break the monotony of her life, so she comes up with the wild idea of cooking all 524 recipes in Julia Child’s, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, in the span of one year. While she hunts down kidneys, bakes souffles and kneads French bread, she manages to learn valuable life lessons that ultimately change her life.

I love to cook, but my specialty can’t be found in Julia Child’s cookbook. I call it, “Kitchen Sink Pancakes”. The may not sound so appetizing, but trust me when I tell you that they’re awesome!

I asked some of our gallery artists about their talents in the kitchen and here’s what they said:

Ann Hair: I’m just an average cook; it’s not really my thing, but I do like comfort foods.
Anne Boysen: Pound Cake
Anne Cunningham: Tuna Kabobs
Conni Mainne: Cheesecake
Eric McRay: Chili
Kristin Gibson: My kids love Roller Coaster Breakfast, but I would say Pasta.
Jane Faudree: Spaghetti
Joe DiGuilio: Stuffed Shells
Nancy Noel May: I come for a long line of great cooks—there is not just one thing I’m known for—but I do make great appetizers and a mean shrimp salad.
Rollin Karg: Cold Cereal
Stan Harmon: Carbonara

We hope this list inspired you to get into the kitchen to show off your own culinary artistry. Ten of us spent ten days painting in Tuscany. Ann was my roommate for our one day in Rome and we explored the city together, walking all seven hills by my guess! We had a lot of fun on that trip which set the tone for our working relationship. Ann is warm and friendly and a devoted globe-trotter. A lapse of concentration can ruin a piece, but a controlled flick of the wrist or light breath through the blowpipe can give the piece a subtle curve or movement that makes it extraordinary. This controlled spontaneity is what makes glass so magical.

Glassblowing is much akin to a dance; the artist moves with respect and knowledge of the partner. Each has an important contribution to the final piece, but only one will lead - the artist. The dance, when completed, yields an object that was only conceived in one's imagination or on paper, a tangible work as a result of collaboration between artist and material.”

-Mark Rosenbaum

Collector's Home

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px;

I’m not held to displaying certain pieces in certain rooms. I like to mix it up. I look for a unifying theme or color or subject matter, not concerning myself with the styles of the pieces. I don’t try to match anything… paintings don’t have to match the sofa, nor do I worry about different colors and styles in the framing. It all adds to the texture and interest in the room.

My great room has cathedral ceilings and my collection is too large to consider hanging sparsely. I like to have work that appears at eye level from many perspectives, from sitting, standing and higher. I want to continue to add to my collection, so I have to keep coming up with creative ways to display it all while still honoring the integrity of each piece. While her jewelry is cast and finished in Beverly Hills and her gems come from all over the world, Barbara crafts all of the original wax models herself. “My hands touch every piece of jewelry” she says. “It’s a very small business, inspired by the love that it takes to produce my art.”

“I wake up each morning, grateful that I created a career as an artist.” Barbara’s home based studio is filled with light and a tree-house view of the pines. Her business requires extensive travel but she and her husband, Sky Hall, always look forward to returning to their mountain retreat. This is where she reviews her gem selections, many sculpted by some of the finest gem artists in the world, and determines their final design. She’s drawn to large colored stones and raw, mysterious crystals which she transforms into her dramatic, yet minimalist signature jewelry.

Cool Tips for Perfect Summer Parties

by Charlene Dupray

-Ice, Ice Baby! Never underestimate how much ice you'll need during a summer party-have plenty on hand, even if the party's indoors.

-Water, Water Everywhere... Displaying your artwork and photos can be overwhelming, to say the least. Where to start? Don't worry. It's not as daunting as it seems. I'll walk you through some simple steps to get you started.

"Salon style" hanging is an exciting way to display your artwork and involves creating collections of artworks. Refer to the photos of Marlene and Ivan White's home to see how grouping different art can result in a pleasing arrangement.

This isn't about matching your sofa! Be prepared to try something different. Consider a unifying theme or style. Try grouping all of the paintings that have red or those with a coastal theme, for instance. It is not necessary to match frame colors and styles.

The garage is a great place to work on your wall arrangements-back out the car, sweep the floor and get ready to create a new layout.
1. It's helpful to write down the wall measurements and note window and door placements.
2. Bring out all of your paintings and photos and prop them up against the walls of the garage. Now you can see what you have to work with.
3. Use a piece of chalk to make a rough outline on the floor of your wall, including the doors and windows. Then you can lay out the artwork until you find what you like.
4. Once you have an arrangement, sketch out your diagram on paper. You may also want to cut out pieces of newspaper to the size of each painting. Use a straight pin to put them up on your wall, referring to your diagram.
5. Repeat this process for each wall, keeping in mind what is hanging on adjacent walls. The room should feel cohesive.
6. Contact us at Spectrum. For an hourly fee, I can come out and display your collection for you. Is something missing? Need a special item to complete the look? Visit our website at www.spectrumartandjewelry.com or stop in the store to see all of the paintings currently available in the gallery.

Home is Where the Art Is

by Nancy Noel May

Warm and welcoming, Marlene and Ivan White's Wilmington home is filled with sunlight, southern charm, two dogs and a cat.

Marlene's great sense of style is evident in the layers of color, texture and pattern in her chosen fabrics and artwork. An eclectic mix of soft landscapes, brightly covered architectural paintings and primitive 'outsider art" show that Marlene has no fear of "mixing it up" when it comes to staging her home.

An open and airy great room flows seamlessly into the dining area where a handcrafted buffet by local artisan Susan Covington provides a great showcase for Marlene's pottery collection. An old window, now a mirror, reflects light into the room, giving the impression of a secret view. Rosy corals, soft greens and buttery yellows throughout the furnishing and art create a cohesive feel in these rooms. Just the place to kick back and relax with a good book and a dog (or two) at your side.

Meet the Artist: Mandy Johnson, Painter

An old box of postcards sparked painter Mandy Johnson's desire to pursue a career in art. The school in her small hometown of Scotland Neck, NC, offered no art classes. Still, Mandy's parents understood the value of art education, so they turned to a local artist to teach their children the craft.

The five siblings learned to paint in oils, using a collection of fine art postcards as inspiration. It wasn't until Mandy's first college art history course that she began to recognize the famous paintings from the old postcards.

While educated in the classics, Mandy now expresses her rebellious side. "I like to break the rules", Mandy says. "Exaggeration and distortion and bold, simple color give my figures attitude."

Her paintings convey work, food, and dance; all themes stemming from her early life growing up on a farm.

"Now I find inspiration whenever I go out, take a walk, or ride my bike", she says. "Everything I see can be interpreted as shape, form and color to create a story."
